Another Fool Heard From

Jann Wenner has chosen to share his insights on the London bombing with us:

Amid all the optimism surrounding Blair, Bono & Geldolf doing Live 8 and G 8, and the award of that most wonderful and pacific of international institutions and global brotherhood -- the Olympics -- what a grim thing to have happened.

Good start, Jann. Couldn't agree with you more. Except it didn't just happen. Someone perpetrated this crime. But I won't nitpick.

Violence rarely gets us anywhere; the PLO, the IRA, the SLA, among others have achieved so little with their terrorism.

Hm. Does Wenner regret that terrorists wage violence on innocents or does he simply rue that they don't achieve anything? It sounds like the latter. The fact that terrorists don't achieve their goals through violence is a good thing, in my opinion. Perhaps Jann is looking forward to a day when Western civilizations bow to terrorists' demands. It's interesting he structured this sentence as such.

If the London bombings are the work of an Al Qaeda offshoot, then you have to fairly say, in the same way we condemn other's terror, this is in part the result of Bush's War on Iraq.

Sigh. I wonder if Jann is willing to take his argument to the logical extreme. Wage a military campaign = blow up some buses filled with innocent citizens. It's all the same. In Wenner's world, any response is justifiable. We take out thuggish, backwards, murderous dictators, they blow up buses. It's all good. Using his logic, we simply could have dropped a nuclear warhead on Kabul on 9/12/01. Why not? You reap what you sow.
